The Samurai Fan Man was a fan-wielding demonic samurai monster who served as the main antagonist of the episode "Calamity Kimberly."

History

Mighty Morphin

The Samurai Fan Man is created by Finster to make Kimberly's already awful day even worse and Rita teleports him down to Earth.

Samurai Fan Man then ambushes Kimberly and Tommy in Angel Grove Park and opens up his gourd to quickly neutralize Tommy (putting him in a temporary coma) and then captures Kimberly with it. Inside his jug is an alternate dimension where he traps Kimberly and, if the jar breaks, she will be trapped there forever.

Weapons in his arsenal include his fan (which fires electrical sparks and a huge gust of wind, the main purpose of which is to blow his adversaries long distances away from him), a large steel rake, a lance, and explosive quills on his helmet that seem to regenerate themselves. Job done, the Samurai Fan Man goes to a cafe to celebrate with Goldar.

The Power Rangers, after a briefing from Zordon meet him there and a battle then ensues between them, the Samurai Fan Man, and Goldar but the Fan Man proves too much for Jason and Trini and ends the skirmish by summoning his fan and blowing away the Rangers. This is intended to send them to another dimension forever but Alpha and Zordon manage to rescue them. Thinking the Rangers gone, Samurai Fan Man goes to a café swarmed with Putties (called the Putty Bowl Restaurant) alongside Squatt, Baboo, and Goldar to celebrate until the Rangers go to fight him once again.

Kimberly is still trapped inside the jug when Rita makes Samurai Fan Man and Goldar grow to a giant size. Jason then calls on Tommy, who has just woken up from his coma who then morphs and joins the others. Tommy calls on the Dragonzord which combines with the other Zords to form the Dragonzord in Battle Mode.

None of its attacks harm Samurai Fan Man, although they do catch him by surprise and make him drop his rake. The battle continues to go poorly with their best efforts only pushing him back a bit until they began to turn the tide when they summon the Power Staff and manage to cut the monster's gourd loose, freeing Kimberly.

After a quick battle with the samurai lance which overpowers the Rangers. Kimberly summons her Pterodactyl Dinozord so Jason, knowing that they need more power, has the team form the Megazord. They call on the Power Sword, breaking Samurai Fan Man's lance but he then blows blow both the Megazord and Dragonzord away simultaneously with his fan which are stopped by a nearby mountainside.

Goldar orders him to destroy them and he charges but the Rangers recover and call on Titanus to form the Ultrazord. With its firepower, they are finally able to destroy the Samurai Fan Man who faceplants and explodes which forces an angry Goldar to retreat. Tvicon TV STORY-Calamity Kimberly

Personality

The Samurai Fan Man was a ruthless, headstrong, arrogant and psychopathic monster that would not stop at nothing to destroy the Power Rangers. He was also a skilled and cunning strategist, as he used his jug to trap Kimberly and nearly won. However, his arrogance was ultimately his undoing as he underestimated the Rangers and charged fearlessly at the Ultrazord to his doom.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Strength: The Samurai Fan Man was so strong that he could swing his fan with enough force to blow away both Rangers and Zords as well as block Jason's Power Sword with his bare hand.
  • Durability: The Samurai Fan Man took the combined firepower of the Triceratops and Sabertooth Tiger Dinozords' tail blasts but didn't get a scratch. Even a punch to the center of his chest from the Dragonzord Battle Mode barely fazed him and a slash right down his front from its Power Staff was shrugged off.
  • Explosive Quills: The Samurai Fan Man could pull quills out of his helmet and pitch them forth. Just two of these were powerful enough that just two of them knocked back the Dragonzord Battle Mode.
  • Weapon Summoning: The Samurai Fan Man could summon his rake or fan out of thin air in a clear jump cut.

Abilities

  • Skilled Fighter: The Samurai Fan Man was so skilled at fighting that he could overwhelm both the Dragonzord in Battle Mode and the Megazord easily. Even Finster called him a "real bruiser."

Weaknesses

  • Cockiness: The Samurai Fan Man was so confident in his abilities that he arrogantly charged the Ultrazord, expecting to defeat it as he did the Dragonzord Battle Mode, Megazord, and individual Zords. He was easily dispatched by the Ultrazord.

Arsenal

  • Fan: The Samurai Fan Man's signature weapon and namesake with which he could blow away his enemies with this massive Japanese battle fan.
    • Attack Wind: The fan could unleash gusts of wind when flapped so violent that even the Megazord and Dragonzord were blown backwards into a mountain.
      • Explosive Sparkles: When flapping, the fan could unleash sparks that cause damage and add insult to injury.
  • Gourd: Samurai Fan Man had a massive Japanese gourd that he used to seal Kimberly inside.
    • Collapsing Dimension: Samurai Fan Man's gourd had a dimension inside which would vanish over time along with the victim.
  • Samurai Lance: Samurai Fan Man's primary hand to hand weapon when enlarged which had two razor sharp blades on either end for combat.
  • Steel Rake: Samurai Fan Man's primary weapon whilst small that could cut down six Rangers.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

  • Like many other characters, the Samurai Fan Man was voiced by Tom Wyner.

Design

  • The Samurai Fan Man is based on a Japanese samurai and the Golden Horned King from the Asian folk tale, Journey to the West.

Etymology

  • His name demonstrates that he is a samurai, wielded a fan, and is a man. Samurai were Japanese military nobles and retainers for landholders during the medieval era.

Notes

  • Unlike most monsters who cower in fear of the Ultrazord, Samurai Fan Man showed no fear and even charged at the Ultrazord which led to his destruction.
