Passing the Lantern is the ninth episode of the third season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The third Zeo Serial Short aired before a later airing of the episode.

Synopsis[]

Adam receives a special gift: a paper lantern. Then, Billy and Adam learn of the lantern's powers. But, Lord Zedd has plans of his own when he sends Rito to steal the lantern.

Plot[]

Adam receives a special gift from his family: a paper lantern. Then, Billy and Adam learn of the lantern's mystical powers from Ko who lives in a Japanese Garden with many important lanterns of his own. They are told to watch the gardens until he gets back.

Meanwhile, Lord Zedd has plans of his own. He sends Baboo, and Squatt to steal the lantern so he can harness its powers. Rito complains he wants to go as well. Annoyed, he and Rita agrees, lamenting that those three better make good uses of themselves. They send the Tengas to distract Billy and Adam. Aisha, Tommy and Rocky are sent to help out. Baboo and Squatt take not only Adam's lantern, but many others as well before disappearing.

Later on, Rito realizes they've failed in their mission when he confronts Baboo and Squatt for taking too many lanterns. He unwittingly tosses Adam's lantern aside (recovered by Bulk and Skull) and take the others instead.

At the Command Center, Aisha reassures Adam it wasn't his fault. He points out it was because his family trusted him with the lantern and he failed. Tommy suspects that Zedd has sent Rito, Baboo and Squatt to steal the lantern because he plans to use its special powers for his own. Zordon affirms that he is correct about it and making Alpha 5 worry.

At Lord Zedd's Moon Palace, he is infuriated with Rito, Baboo and Squatt for messing up big time. Baboo and Squatt tried to claim the lanterns are special, while Rito tries to calm the angry Zedd down. Rita manages to salvage the situation and takes one lantern to create Lanterra to fight the Rangers. Zedd orders the trio to get rid of the other lanterns at once.

On the run, Bulk and Skull look over their Junior Police Officer's manual unaware that Lanterra is following them. Skull loudly reads out that a good officer keeps track of what's in front and to the sides. He and Bulk does that, while Lanterra is behind them mimicking their moves. When Skull read from behind, he and Bulk are scared as heck in facing Lanterra. They flee for their lives with Adam's lantern in tow.

At the Command Center, Tommy notices that Zedd had turned Adam's lantern into a monster on the Viewing Globe and tells Adam. The Rangers morph immediately to fight Lanterra. After realizing the true meaning of the lantern's power, Adam and the Rangers are able to defeat Lanterra. Zedd and Rita grows him in retaliation. The Rangers call their Zords and Ninjor. They defeated Lanterra, while Rita and Zedd blame their failures on Rito, Baboo and Squatt.

Later at the Youth Center, Bulk and Skull return Adam's missing lantern, take credit for the entire monster battle and then slip on a wet floor.

Cast[]

Errors[]

  • Aisha backflips off a tree and launches off a Tenga; she is launching forward to hit the tree but she is jumping straight up two shots later.
  • Dairanger and “Galaxy Rangers” are credited at the end of the credits instead of Kakuranger.
  • The shot of the boys and Aisha as the Ninja Rangers leaping into battle is recycled from Ninja Quest Part III. If played in slow-motion, Kimberly's arms can be seen for a small second.

Notes[]

  • This episode aired the same day as VR TroopersIcon-crosswiki (Season 2) episode 5, Quest for PowerIcon-crosswiki, Part Two.
  • Koh’s garden was filmed at Bridgeport Lake inside Valencia, California. The water had lily pads added to match the re-theming and a “to Japanese Gardens” sign was added for filming. [1]
  • The scene of Bulk and Skull screaming and asking why they were screaming was an ad-lib done by Scrier and Narvy not present in the original script. [2]
  • Skull refers to Squatt, Baboo, and Rito as "Evil Space Aliens" when they see them stealing lanterns. This is the only time that this term is used for the villainous group in the entire franchise's run.
