Icon-megarangerThis article is about a/an villain in Power Rangers in Space, the last installment in the Zordon Era.

"Take it easy, Ecliptor. I just happened to be in the neighborhood. Ah ha ha ha. Ah ha ha ha ha ha."
―Darkonda's first words after Ecliptor cryptically told him to go away.[src]

"Ecliptor! I'll get you for this! You can't destroy me so easily!."
―Darkonda before mutating.[src]

"Dark Specter?! (...) Ahhh!"
―Darkonda's final words before being devoured by Dark Specter for his final demise.[src]

Darkonda was a psychotic agent in the service of the United Alliance of Evil and Ecliptor's rival as well as the archenemy of Andros.

History

This article contains content in reference to the main TV series, as well as supplemental material, such as the comics. A sliding/floating timeline applies. Story instances for TV and other media will be clearly marked.

Darkonda was a ruthless and violent bounty hunter who had been directly involved in roughly a hundred different wars, assassinations, and crimes throughout known space. Little was known about Darkonda's past before becoming the deceptive bounty hunter that he was today. Over the years Darkonda had acquired extensive knowledge about countless locales throughout the Milky Way galaxy along with connections in the criminal underworlds of various planets, even Earth.

Approximately 15 years before Power Rangers in Space, Darkonda was hired by Dark Specter to travel to the planet KO-35 in the Karova System to capture Karone, the sister of Andros the Red Space Ranger.

It is later revealed that he murdered Astronema's mother and father and gave her as a young child to Ecliptor for him to train so she could become Dark Specter's heir. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Heir to the Darkness

In the years that followed Darkonda took an increasingly important role in KO-35 history. Although the specifics are still not known, Darkonda was a significant player in the events that led to the eventual evacuation of the planet including the Barillian Bug infestation that decimated much of the planet's population. After the complete evacuation of the planet, Darkonda used it as a base of his own. Unchallenged, he looted and pillaged all that the Kerovans left behind in their hurry to evacuate KO-35. At one point, Darkonda encountered Ecliptor. The two took an immense disliking for one another and became rivals.

Several years later Darkonda met up with Astronema, now the Princess of Evil, and won a place on her Dark Fortress as her second in command (co-ranking with Ecliptor) after he infected Carlos Vallerte, the Black Space Ranger, with the venom of a Barillian Bug. He also attempted to turn the Rebels of KO-35 against the Power Rangers by framing the Rangers for a mysterious ailment that was turning people into coral.

Secretly, Darkonda planned on killing both Astronema and Ecliptor and taking over her Dark Fortress. Although Ecliptor was aware of Darkonda's true intentions, Darkonda blackmailed Ecliptor into remaining silent by threatening to reveal the secrets behind Astronema's origin to her.

While in Astronema's service, Darkonda had many secret conversations with Dark Specter, in which he openly questioned Astronema's loyalties. After Astronema learned of her true past, Darkonda suggested that she be destroyed (along with Ecliptor). Dark Specter, however, was not (fully) persuaded despite Darkonda's insistence.

Darkonda and Dark Specter

Yartu

When Astronema briefly defected to the Power Rangers, Dark Specter gave Darkonda command over the Dark Fortress. Darkonda was also tasked with planting cybernetic implants on Ecliptor that would suppress any feelings he may have had for Astronema. After Astronema was captured, Darkonda altered her as well, turning her into a being of pure evil. To his surprise and anger, the newly reprogrammed Astronema promptly retook control of the Dark Fortress and threw him out despite his protests that she would have been destroyed without him. He teleported away, but not before reminding Astronema that he still had some lives left while she only had one.

Some time later, Darkonda was recruited again by Astronema, this time to lure the Rangers into a trap. It is unknown how or why she enlisted his aid, although Dark Specter may have ordered her to do so.

He later returned to aid the UAE in Dark Specter's Universal Conquest. He was with Astronema's army attacking the planet Earth. In a final act of betrayal, Darkonda commandeered a Velocifighter with two missiles powerful enough to destroy the Earth and planned to use one of them to destroy Dark Specter in an attempt to take power in controlling the universe for himself. He intended to use the other to destroy the Dark Fortress with Astronema and Ecliptor on board. However, after he fired the other missile, Dark Specter reappeared and swallowed the Velocifighter and Darkonda with it, killing both him and Darkonda in an instant as the missile exploded the instant he swallowed the traitor. Ironically, by using up the only planet destroying missiles the Alliance had, Darkonda unintentionally saved Earth from destruction.

Split History

Darkonda was first seen as a possible "level six" target along with Elgar and the Machine Empire during a mission with the Omega Rangers on the alien planet called "Breel". However he never actually fought them. Comicicon COMIC STORY- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Boom! Studios) Issue 42

Personality

Darkonda is a gleefully psychopathic, malicious, manipulative, arrogant, and sadistic being who takes pleasure in playing mind games with his opponents - namely Andros the Red Space Ranger. He often taunts Andros about kidnapping his sister, mocking him that she doesn't even know her brother is still alive. He also treats Ecliptor with disdain, viewing him as soft and weak because of the way Ecliptor cares about Astronema. Darkonda shows defiance to powerful beings such as Dark Specter, as his true loyalty is only to himself. He wanted to kill Dark Specter, then Astronema and Ecliptor to become King Darkonda. Ultimately, his ambitions prove to be his undoing, as he loses his last life attempting to seize power from Dark Specter. Ironically, by killing Dark Specter with the Super Missles, Darkonda ends up saving Earth from destruction.

  • Energy Bolts: Darkonda can fire red energy bolts from his hands.
  • Growth Beam: Darkonda can fire an orange laser from his left hand that can make monsters grow into giants as shown with the Barillian Bug in the episode "The Barillian Sting".
  • Shape Shifting: Darkonda can shapeshift into any being that he chooses at will with the most notable example being when he turned into a fake identity called Yatru in the episode "Zhane's Destiny" to aid in his scheme to poison the rebels on KO-35 with Coralizer's coral.
  • Forceful Fusion: Darkonda can force Ecliptor to fuse with him into Darkliptor, as he did in the episodes "T.J,'s Identity Crisis" and "Astronema Thinks Twice". Darkonda is the dominant mind in this form.
  • Nine Lives: Darkonda has nine lives. Only seven of his deaths are depicted:
    • 1: By the Mega Voyager.

    • 3: Once by accidentally walking into one of his own traps.
    • 4 & 5: Twice in combat by Ecliptor.
    • 6 & 7: Unknown
    • 8: Once by the Galactic Rover driven by Zhane.
    • 9: For the final time by Dark Specter himself.

Abilities

  • Expert swordsmanship: Darkonda is an absolute master of hand to hand combat, overwhelming all five Rangers with just his sword despite them using their personal weapons as well as being a perfect match for Ecliptor's swordsmanship.
  • Strength: Darkonda was strong enough to carry young Karone over his shoulder and keep a decent pace as well as overwhelm all five Rangers with him his bare hands.
  • Durability: In the episode "The Rangers' Leap of Faith", Darkonda took a full on blast from the now good Astronema's Wrath Staff straight to the chest and only fell over. Earlier on, in the episode "T.J.'s Identity Crisis", he survived the Flying Power Punch finisher which made him explode but didn't even cost him one of his lives.
  • Hand to Hand Combat: Darkonda can easily outfight the Rangers with just his bare hands.

Weaknesses

Etymology

His name is a portmanteau of "Dark[ness]" and "Anaconda", a species of South American non-poisonous giant serpent commonly found in Amazon rainforest.

Notes

  • Darkonda is the first villain of Power Rangers who is pure evil without any redeeming qualities whatsoever, not helped by his backstabbing tendencies. While he was friendly to the bartender and customers in the Onyx Tavern, it doesn’t excuse his heinousness.
    • He is also the first villain of the "traitorous" type shown in Power Rangers universe, as he fights at the evil side while having his own agenda of plotting behind his leader's back aiming to overthrow him.
  • He was destroyed 9 times in the series, making him the villain with more deaths than any other villain in the series.
  • The story behind his 9 lives originates from the popular proverb about how cats have 9 lives.
  • Darkonda is the first general to be a traitor and the only one to succeed in killing his master, however, Dark Specter survives long enough time to take Darkonda down with him. Deviot would later organize Scorpius' death who will be killed by Leo the Red Ranger. Then, Deviot tries to kill Trakeena but will die in the process transforming her as a being evil and psychopath. Finally, Odius will try to destroy Galvanax but he will be killed by the Rangers.
  • Back in early 2003, shortly after the series changed hands from Saban Entertainment to Disney, some of the monster costumes, including Darkonda's Super form, were auctioned off by ABC Auctions. It sold for $735.
