Charlie Haskell [1] is a New-Zealand director best known for his work on Power Rangers.

Biography[]

Charlie Haskell's parents were teachers, and as a result their Ashburton-born son grew up at various points around Southland. That rural upbringing had a hand in Charlie's decision to study property management at Lincoln University. Bachelor of Commerce in hand, he then did some travel before beginning the studies that would feed directly into his screen career. Based at the Christchurch Arts Centre, the one year filmmaking course saw students working in a hands-on environment, often shooting on 16mm (the course was later reborn in Wellington under new owners, run as the NZ Film and Television School).

Emerging from New Zealand film school in the late 1980's Charlie began life as an assistant director, working on such films as 'End of the Golden Weather' and 'The Piano', at a time the NZ film industry was expanding at a great rate. He began directing 2nd Unit on the American TV show 'Hercules' in '93, which led to an extended period of work with Pacific Renaissance Pictures. This lead to directing main unit on 32 episodes of the above shows, along with 'Young Hercules' and 'Jack of All Trades'.

Career[]

Charlie has been a freelance director in the New Zealand film and television industry for the past 25 years, initially specialising in action as a 2nd Unit Director Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, before moving on to drama. He has directed on a wide variety of NZ and international productions, such as Power Rangers, The Almighty Johnsons, telefeature Tangiwai – A Love Story and docudrama Pirates of the Airwaves. He has worked on three seasons of the Starz network show Ash vs Evil Dead in the dual role of 2nd Unit Director/Associate Producer. Recently, Charlie directed two episodes of the Danish/NZ co-production Straight Forward, as well as being lead director on Germany/NZ co-production The Gulf. He is passionate about projects that combine great storytelling with global outreach.
