Barreled Scholar Bucrates (樽学者ブクラテス Tarugakusha Bukuratesu?) is a stout little being with a barrel-shaped body and extensive knowledge, abile to disguise himself as an ordinary barrel. He is called "Mentor" by Captain Zahab and is the one who gave him an immortal body through the soul jewels produced by the Demon Beast Daitanix.
Though his vote was for his niece Spectral Empress Iliess to become acting general among the Barban pirates' release, the position was given instead to Gun General Sambash. During Sambash's term to find a means to revive Daitanix, Bucrates offers his knowledge to direct Sambash to ideas of what energy sources to target. However, when Sword General Budoh becomes acting general and Bucrates feels belittled by the samurai having no need for him, he works with Iliess to sabotage Budoh before labeling him a traitor so she can take command. Though Zaihab knew of their treachery, he allowed them to believe that they got away with Iliess the new acting general.
However, learning of Dytanix's rotting after he was kept in the dark, Bucrate overheard Zaihab's scheme to use Iliess's soul gem to resurrect the monster before it sinks. Once Iliess is killed, Bucrates attempts to revive her before it was taken by Batobas. Cut down by Zaihab, no longer needing his services, Bucrates is chained up and thrown into the briny deep.

Desiring Zaihab's death, Bucrates forcing Hyuuga to work for him by trapping the wounded GoTaurus in a small barrel. During the Daitanix battle, he allows for Hyuuga to assist in the battle by releasing GoTaurus temporarily, but draws them both back when the battle is over. However, he is mortally wounded in episode 48, by Steerwoman Shelinda, for his betrayal before he can see his revenge fulfilled. He commits suicide in the following episode, to provide a distraction so Hyuuga can escape without being seen and take GoTaurus with him.
