A Face From The Past is the eighteenth episode of Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. It is the second of the three-episode story arc which sets up the return of Queen Bansheera.

Synopsis[]

When a monster sets a power plant ablaze, Captain Mitchell jumps into action and braves the fire to rescue a little girl. The incident reveals to Carter that it was Captain Mitchell who had saved him from a fire many years back when he was a child.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Kelsey rollerblading through the Aquabase one morning, in a hurry as she is nearly late after being summoned by Captain Mitchell. She meets up with the other Rangers and asks why the captain summoned them, however they are as clueless as she is. Captain Mitchell then emerges from his office and tells the Rangers what he wants them to do... take a day off. Joel assumes he's kidding, but Mitchell confirms that it's no joke and they deserve it after all their hard work recently. He then dismisses the Rangers, who are surprised but very happy to have a day to themselves.

Most of the Rangers head to the beach; Chad and Kelsey enjoy some surfing while Dana buries Ryan in sand. Joel meanwhile is enjoying himself signing autographs for his adoring fans. The only Ranger who isn't taking the chance to relax is Carter, who is on a hill overlooking the city practicing his fighting moves. As he prepares to go for a run, he is suddenly joined by Captain Mitchell (also wearing training gear) who reminds Carter he was allowed to take a day off. Carter explains he never takes a day off from training, so Mitchell instead asks to join him. Carter is surprised, but agrees and the two spend some time sparring with each other. Captain Mitchell tells Carter not to hold back, so Carter uses his full array of moves only for Mitchell to knock him down. Carter is pleasantly surprised at how good Mitchell is. The two then go for a run, although this time Carter is able to keep ahead of Captain Mitchell who assures Carter he's still got it.

In Skull Cavern, Vypra and Loki prepare their latest plan; they intend to unleash their new monster Shockatron to destroy Mariner Bay's two power stations; doing so will leave the Aquabase defenseless. At one of the power stations, a class of children is being given a tour.

At the top of a hill, Carter waits as Captain Mitchell finally catches up to him exhausted. Carter gets in a couple of good-natured jibes, and Mitchell tells Carter that when he was younger he used to train just as hard as Carter is now but even so he still took a day off now and again. He then asks Carter why he's so driven, and Carter tells him the story of the fireman who saved him when he was younger and his house caught on fire, holding up a wooden board so Carter could escape. Carter tells Mitchell that even though he never found out who the fireman was, he is still his hero and he strives to be just like him. Captain Mitchell reminds Carter that even heroes are only human. Suddenly, a dark cloud appears over Mariner Bay as Shockatron is sent down. Carter and Captain Mitchell witness this and leave to investigate.

Inside the power station, Shockatron plugs himself into the consoles and causes massive damage throughout the facility including a large fire near the class of children. Shockatron leaves to take out the other power station as a fire crew arrives to take on the blaze. Carter and Captain Mitchell also arrive, and as Carter morphs Mitchell puts on firefighting gear much to the Red Ranger's surprise as it becomes clear he has experience as a fireman. The two head into the station to find anyone who is trapped, and locate one man trapped under an iron bar. Carter frees him as Mitchell shares his oxygen mask, and they get the injured man out. As the do the other Rangers arrive in the Rescue Rover. Ms. Fairweather contacts Captain Mitchell telling him Shockatron is attacking the other power station. He sends the Rangers there to take out the monster while he takes care of things at this site.

Shockatron plugs himself into the other power station as the Rangers race there, blasting their way through a blockade constructed by Batlings. Back at the first power station, the class of children find their escape route blocked by a locked door, while the direction they came from is consumed by debris. As the class starts to struggle against the smoke, Captain Mitchell bursts through the debris and tells them to follow him down the hallway. The class does so, but a little girl at the rear of the line realizes she's left her teddy bear behind and goes back to get it.

At the second power station, the Rangers arrive and confront Shockatron who summons a group of Batlings. The Rangers are able to easily take them down before engaging Shockatron himself. They initially struggle, however the Rangers summon the V-Lancers (while Ryan uses the Titanium Axe) and manage to turn the tide using them before Carter lands a vital blow destroying Shockatron. Carter tells the others they need to get back to the first power station to help with the fire.

Arriving back, the Rangers are told that Captain Mitchell went back in to find the little girl. Carter is ready to go and save him, only for one of the firemen to warn him the building is about to explode. Carter heads in regardless as the others plead with him to be careful.

As the little girl is about to be overcome by smoke, Captain Mitchell finds her and gives her his oxygen mask and prepares to lead her out. Suddenly he sees an overhead pipe about to fall and runs to stop it, saving the girl as Carter arrives. He makes sure the girl is ok as he sees Captain Mitchell doing the same thing the fireman who saved him as a boy did. As he starts to think that the fireman who saved him as a child has been in front of him since he became Red Ranger, Mitchell tells him to get the girl out and Carter regains his composure and takes her.

He gets her to safety, however the building is consumed by a huge explosion soon after. The Rangers are horrified and assume the worst, however a few seconds later they see Captain Mitchell is safe as he descends using his hose from another part of the building. Everyone is very relieved as he reunites with everyone.

Unfortunately the danger isn't over, as Jinxer uses his magic to resurrect Shockatron's remains. As Carter gets ready to ask Captain Mitchell an important question, Shockatron reappears as a giant towering over the city. The Rangers waste no time in summoning the Rail Rescues and forming the Lightspeed Megazord. After resisting Shockatron's attempts to overpower it with his flying abilities, the Megazord pummels the monster with its ladder arms before finishing him off for good with its saber.

Although Shockatron was destroyed, the demons aren't too despondent as the planets are about to align for the ceremony which will allow them to return Queen Bansheera's bodily form to her. Olympius tells Vypra and Loki they must destroy the Rangers before his mother returns. The two demons pay their prince little mind, with Loki telling him that he already has a plan in mind before walking off. Olympius remarks to himself that he's not going to wait for that plan to fail and intends to take matters into his own hands.

At the Aquabase, Carter goes to visit Captain Mitchell who is being treated for his injury by Ms. Fairweather. When he enters, he sees Captain Mitchell has a scar in the same area that the fireman who saved him as a child was burned. Carter is now certain that Captain Mitchell is the fireman who saved him as a child, and Captain Mitchell confirms it. He recalls that when he saw Carter smile at him when he got out of the burning room he knew he'd be ok and that it was a great feeling. He admits that he's kept an eye on Carter through the years, watching as he became a fireman himself which is why he picked him to be the Red Ranger. Carter doesn't know how to thank Captain Mitchell, but the captain assures him that Carter has already thanked him over and over again by continuing to help rescue other people in need. Carter decides that he's going to start training longer and harder than before, but Mitchell assures Carter that he already trains hard enough and sends him out to enjoy what's left of his day off. Carter agrees, but before he does he tells Captain Mitchell that he's still got it.

On the beach, the Rangers are enjoying a game of frisbee and are surprised when Carter arrives ready to join them for some fun. The others aren't sure Carter is capable of having fun, but Carter assures them he is by picking up a water gun and chasing them. The six Rangers enjoy themselves as Captain Mitchell watches proudly from the Rescue Rover.
